Kinds of Tires - Bias Belted Tires
Labels: Tyre TechnicalThe bias belted tire derives its name from its construction - bias body plies and a belt that runs around the circumference of the carcass. Goodyear swept the industry by producing this tire construction in 1967. Since then, it has been the mark of excellence for all tire manufacturers.
Bias belted tires combine the features of bias ply and radial ply tires with fabric belts. Bias ply layers of triple tempered cord are constructed in a similar manner to the standard bias ply tire. This assures the two- directional strength and comfortable ride of the bias ply tire - with the addition of belts of fabric cord running the circumference of the tire, between the body plies and the tread, like the radial ply tire.
As the bias belted tire rolls, the sidewalls flex easily to provide a smooth, comfortable ride. At the same time, the belt holds the tread firm and flat on the road, while tread grooves stay open to provide good traction in wet or dry weather.
This belt also resists the squirm and road scrubbing that characterizes a bias ply tire. As a result, bias belted tires get long mileage with excellent handling characteristics. For example, when you drive a car through a curve or corner, centrifugal force pulls it toward the outside. With conventional bias ply construction, much of this stress is delivered to the carcass, which can become quite distorted. This also causes one side (shoulder) of the tire to lift slightly off the road, so less tread is making road contact.
The tread of the bias belted tire stays flat on the road, because the belt holds it there. This stability means dependability on the straightways, too, since the belt lays the rubber flat on the road, hoop-like, with resulting excellent control.
