The radial ply tires derives its name from the fact that the body plies run straight across, from bead to bead, at an angle 90 degress to the center line of the tire - radially to the center line. This is apparently looking at the area underneath the belt, appearing on either side of the belt.

Radial ply tires were developed in Europe, where they became generally more popular than conventionally constructed tire. The belt is the outstanding feature of the radial ply tire, because it provides stability and long mileage. The belt is a reinforcing layer of two or more plies which run around the circumference of the tire between the radial body plies and the tread. The belt of the radial tires has four plies. Don't be confused by this, even though there are four plies, the combination is called a belt, in a singular sense. Radial tires were the first popular belted tires.

You see, radial plies give strenght only in one direction. Without the belt, radial ply tires would not be as strong as conventional tires. It's the belt, running around the circumference of the carcass, that reinforce the tread and supports the carcass. And it is the belt in the radial pl tires that gives these advantages: long mileage; excellent stability; superior traction; and goodhandling. Why? Because the belt holds the tread flat on the road, providing resistance to the squirming and scrubbing action that is a major cause of tire wear. And because the belt holds the tread grooves open for good traction in all kinds of weather.

In the past, radial tires have been making headway as the tire for all applications. Now it is generally accepted fact that radial tires deliver good performances in every area.
