Tire Aspect Ratio
Labels: Tyre TechnicalIt is important to learn the meaning of this terminology because it relates to the shape of the tire and the numerical symbol of the tire that designates the profile of the series.
The aspect ratio of the tire is the ratio of the height to the width.
The height is measured from the thread to bead. The width is measured from sidewall to sidewall. Tires today are wider than they are high. So an 82 series tire has a height that is 82 percent of its width. A 70 series tire has a height that is 70 percent of its width. A 60 series tire has a height that is 60 percent of its width. These tires are wider than they are high.
Aspect Ratio (series)=(Section Height/Section Width) x 100
Low profile is the overall name given to 78 series tires and lower. These tires are noticeably wider than they are high-and called low profile tires. If a 195/70SR14 tire is mentioned; the 70 means it is a low profile tire that is only 70 percent as high as it is wide, 14 means that the rim has a diameter of 14 inches and 195 means the section width in millimeters measured from sidewall to sidewall at the widest point. SR identifies speed and construction indicators.
Many years ago, automobile tires had a skinny look, like those on model T fords. Today, they are fat and squat, by comparison. For example in 1929 the cross section width of auto tires was 4.75 inches and the rim diameter was 19 inches. The designation of this tire size was 4.75-19. Tires were measured this way until recently.
In 1934, the 6.00-16 tire size was introduced and remained the most popular tire size for many years. In 1947, this changed to 6.70-15 and in 1957, 7.50-14.
Since then, automobile wheel sizes have remained basically at either 14 or 15 inches in diameter. But tire shapes have continued to change. When the 7.50-14 size was replaced by the 7.75-14, the low profile tire was born. And this development began the trend to lower and wider tires.
Once again, this relates directly to the aspect ratio, the ratio of the height to width. Today, there are many different low profile tires. To differentiate between them, we speak of them as being of a particular series (aspect ratio).
