Do you know that tyre tread means a lot more than just a piece of rubber around the tyre? Thought tyre created for the same purpose, they have different features, especially concerning tyre tread. Like any other parts tyre tread also consist of different section that affects the tyre performance such as quietness, comfort and safety.

What are the tyre tread structures?

1. Shoulder. This section of the tread starts on the edge to the upper of tyre side wall. Shoulder tends to provide contact with the road while you maneuver and serve as heat dispersal.

2. Grooves. This section of the tread serves as channel for water to go directly from the front of the tyre to the back, when running on a wet road surface. It also provides improvement in terms of braking and driving stability. Groove designs affects road noise and tread wear.

3. Sipe. This section of thread is a fine slit-like groove that improves braking and driving performance, this allow the block to flex which allows increase in traction especially in icy conditions which is evident on winter tyres.

4. Blocks. This section of the tread provides traction for the tire, usually the majority of the tyres tread composes of a blocks.

5. Dimples. This is the indentation on the tread of the tire the purpose is to improve cooling this is located near the shoulder of the tyre.

6. Ribs. This section of the tread runs circumferentially around the tyre that create circumferential contact, this part of tread is created by grooves.

Proper design of tread improves performance of the tyre, and every tread design serves each purpose, however not all of this features is present on the tyre but there are still tyre that excel with others depending of what condition you are going to use them.
