Tire Break-in for Optimum Performance

Labels:

Your car tire composes of several components and just like your car, tire is also necessary to break-in to obtain its optimum performance. Tires are consist of steel, fabric an rubber that is assembled in layer and to maximize the performance of each component a break-in shall be should be done for tire.

During tire curing there is a lubricant that applies on the tire to prevent it from sticking on the mold these lubricants remains on the tire surface making the tire to reduce traction until such time that the lubricants will be removed as tires is being used. To remove such lubricants you need to have at least 500 miles of easy acceleration braking and cornering. This kind of break in will make the components function as one assembly and maximize the tire life and performance.

As you may not know new tires is less responsive compare to old tires it’s because the old tires has less tread remaining of them while newer tire has full tread that struggles until it is worn down a little. Therefore it is expected that new tire performs less responsive during the break-in period but once the break-in period is met tire start to perform well.

How are you going to know that your tire passes its break-in period?

Well if you look closer on your tire tread you will notice that new tires have colored stripes that appear around the tread, this stripe will be worn down during break-in period so when the time comes and you did not notice the stripes on the tread of tire this mean that the tire is past its break-in period.

So, remember that when you bought new tire avoid hard braking, cornering and accelerating until the break-in period is finish, so that tire maximizes its performance.

Time and Temperature Effect on Tire

Labels:

The time and temperature has some effect on your car tire inflation pressure. It is believe that air inside a tire escapes when tire rubber stretches and to this the effect is that the tire loss approximately 1 psi every month. So, if you do not often check the inflation pressure of your tire then it will become underinflate in due time. Imagine if you do not check the pressure for a year then you are running your car with 12 psi under than the recommended inflation pressure by the car manufacturer.

Also when the outside temperature changes the tire inflation pressure also change, the changes on the inflation pressure comes in 1 psi for every plus or minus 10 °F. This mean that when you set your tire at 60 °F, then if the temperature drop to 20 °F the inflation pressure of your car tire will become underinflate with 4 psi below the pressure you set.

If both time and temperature fluctuate then there will be more loss to inflation pressure, therefore it is recommended that your frequently check the inflation pressure of your car tire. Having an incorrect inflation pressure will result to a problem on your tire such as uneven tire wear and will not maximize the life of the tire. It is recommended that the tire should be check regularly. A weekly checking is enough to detect any problem that occurs and can be repaired immediately.

The good time to check the inflation pressure is during morning before you drive your car to obtain a correct inflation pressure reading adjust the pressure if necessary to the standard pressure recommended by the car manufacturer.

Tire Manufacturing Date and Expiration

Labels:

The importance of knowing tire manufacturing date is to know tire expiration whether the tire is still safe to use or not.

According to Japan Tire Manufacturing Association (JATMA), tire expires 10 years after the manufacturing date, this mean that un-used tire is not safe to use beyond ten years. However, if the tire is put to service after the manufacturing date, it should only be put into service for 6 years. Tire that is used by car for more than 6 years from the start of manufacturing date must be replaced.
According to the tire and rubber manufacturer, it’s very hard to determine the expiration of a tire because of a lot of factors that affects tire aging.

Tire Manufacturing Date

The tire manufacturing date was stamped on the side wall of the tire. When you look closer the at the tire side wall it can easily be spotted, a 4 digit number.

The above example the tire was manufactured on: 7th week of 2007, which means that the tire was manufactured in February 2007. So, if the tire is put to service after the manufacturing date it should be use until February 2013. However, if the tire did not put into service after the manufacturing date, the tire must not be put in used beyond February 2017.
